What does a nanny do?

A nanny would generally have a Level 3 diploma in childcare and if not qualified they would have a minimum of 2 years childcare experience in a childcare role. A nanny is responsible for ensuring the children are cared for in a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment. Dependent on the age of the children and any other individual requirements the nanny will be expected to base their role on those needs.

What skills should a nanny have?

  • A nanny should be able to show good organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills and understand of children’s behavior
  • Be positive and able to deal with challenging situations
  • Have lots of energy and enthusiasm
  • Be imaginative and creative
  • To be flexible and open to change

What are the roles and responsibilities of a nanny?

  • Ensuring all children’s basic needs are met.
  • Ensure that their daily routine is consistent.
  • Ensure they have fun and exciting activities planned.
  • Making sure that each child’s developmental and educational requirements are met.
  • Reporting back to parents about the children’s days.
  • Plan menus and cooks healthy meals.
  • Cleaning and tidying where children are involved e.g nursery, playroom and children’s laundry- agreed with nanny on what is expected of her.

Do nannies live in with families?

Dependent of the needs of the family in terms of their working patterns or how often they are not home for prolonged periods of time. Sometimes live in nanny positions are available because the family has accommodation available and it may be more feasible for the nanny to live with them.

Do you have to be registered with OFSTED to be a nanny?

Nannies are not required to be OFSTED registered it is entirely voluntary. It is however essential to be registered if the family would like to claim childcare vouchers which offer financial support towards childcare costs.

How do nannies get paid?

Nanny employers are no different from any other. They have an obligation to ensure that their employee (the nanny) Is making all compulsory contributions as part of PAYE including Tax and National insurance. As well as compulsory contributions employers must ensure that their nannies pay is in line with the National Minimum wage.

Employers are required to ensure that the nanny has a pension scheme in place as part of the statutory pension scheme as well as any stator sick pay and statutory maternity pay.

Ensuring that all payroll activities are in line with statutory requirements is a consistent process that must be monitored each time your nanny is paid. If you require assistance with any of the payroll there are nanny payroll services which support families with all aspects of nannies pay.

Any other requirements a nanny should have?

  • First aid.
  • Good understanding and knowledge of safeguarding procedures.
  • Have insurance- public liability insurance ensures that the Nanny has the essential cover needed in case anything happens when children are in their care.
  • Updated DBS.
  • Previous experience.
