About the Role:

As Room Manager, you will take full responsibility for the day-to-day running of a designated room, ensuring a safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment for all children. You will lead and support your team to deliver the EYFS curriculum effectively, maintaining high standards of observation, assessment, and planning. Your leadership will directly influence the quality of provision, children’s outcomes, and the overall reputation of the setting.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the daily operation of the room, ensuring routines, activities, and transitions run smoothly and safely.
• Oversee and model high-quality interactions, play experiences, and learning opportunities in line with EYFS.
• Coordinate and quality-check observations, tracking, and assessments to monitor children’s progress and inform planning.
• Allocate key children to staff and ensure consistent, effective key person practice across the team.
• Support, mentor, and supervise room staff, including conducting regular team meetings and contributing to appraisals.
• Work closely with parents and carers, sharing information on children’s development and addressing queries or concerns professionally.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and well-organised environment, ensuring all policies, procedures, and safeguarding requirements are followed.
• Liaise with the wider nursery leadership team to implement improvement plans and contribute to ongoing quality development.

Key Requirements:

• Proven experience working in an early years setting, including responsibility for a specific age group or room.
• Strong team leadership skills, with the ability to motivate, guide, and support staff to deliver high standards.
• In-depth knowledge and practical application of the EYFS framework, including observation, planning, and assessment.
• Demonstrated ability to use tracking and observation systems to monitor and support children’s progress.
• Confident in managing room routines, behaviour, and transitions to create a calm, purposeful environment.
• Excellent communication skills with children, colleagues, and parents, both written and verbal.
• Strong understanding of safeguarding, health and safety, and child protection procedures.
• Organised and proactive, able to prioritise tasks and maintain accurate records and documentation.

Desirable Skills:

• Experience in a Room Leader or similar supervisory role within a nursery or early years setting.
• Familiarity with digital observation and tracking systems for recording children’s development.
• Experience contributing to Ofsted inspections or quality improvement initiatives.
• Ability to support children with additional needs in partnership with SENCOs and external professionals.
• Skills in planning engaging, differentiated activities that extend learning for mixed-ability groups.

Qualifications:

• Level 3 or above qualification in Early Years Education/Childcare (e.g. NVQ, CACHE, NNEB, or equivalent).
• Paediatric First Aid certificate (or willingness to obtain).
• Safeguarding and Child Protection training relevant to early years.
• Additional early years or leadership training (e.g. EYFS leadership, SEN, behaviour management) is desirable.
